Traditional Medicinals interacts with 60 countries

SEBASTOPOL — When it comes to quality control and quality assurance in the organic herbal tea industry, 40-year-old Traditional Medicinals strives to be a standout for consistency and high standards.

The company's 13-member laboratory team includes two Ph.D.s and a group of highly trained managers and technicians with decades of collective experience. They put every sample and batch of herbal tea through rigorous tests and analysis that begins before raw material bulk shipments leave the country of origin and continues through processing and manufacturing until cases of tea leave the loading dock.

"Traditional medicine goes back thousands of years to indigenous peoples who gathered plants for food, observed what animals ate and copied their behavior," according to Drake Sadler, chief visionary officer and co-founder of Traditional Medicinals in 1974, following advice from Rosemary Gladstar, the company's other co-founder. "Like watching a cat with an upset stomach eat grass, or as a result of trial and error, seven global cultures amassed a wealth of data over time in the form of writings or oral tradition that collectively formed the foundation of all medicine. As these cultures evolved, trade in medicinal plants also developed, and data about herbs and homeopathic remedies was shared with other nations."

The fruit of the medicinal plant Siraitia grosvenorii , for one, contains mogrosides, whose extract--the natural compound mogroside V--was tested for its antitumor effect and its probable capability to treat pancreatic cancer, accor...
