In insitu conservation, about 54 medicinal plant conservation areas (MPCA) have been established with in the forest areas of southern India. The National Commission on Science and Technology (NCST) coordinated a three-year regional project "Co-operation in the development and transfer of biotechnologies for sustainable development in the Caribbean". Involving Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica, the project has seen advances in the production of hot peppers (Scotch Bonnet and West Indian Red) resistant to known viruses which usually plague the crop.

The primary focus during the period was on the documentation and conservation of medicinal plants of the region, in addition to the identification of potential ones for commercial use. A document collating work conducted at the University of the West Indies (Mona campus) on medicinal plants, over the past fifty years was commissioned and prepared. Additionally, DNA fingerprints were obtained for most of the medicinal plants selected by Jamaica for further study.
