RECOMMENDATIONS MADE DURING THE ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE WORKSHOP HELD BETWEEN
30TH AUGUST AND 1ST SEPTEMBER 2000. AT KAMPALA UNIVERSITY- UGANDA.

1. The Government appealed to participants to revolutionize Traditional
Medicine through modern scientific methods and to Fight piracy from
foreigners and amongst themselves.

2. The Government expressed the needs for Herbalists to convene and form a
general assembly out of Which a National council for Traditional Medicine
shall be elected to help in policy formulation and enforcement.

3.The Government in conjunction with the newly to be formed
Traditional Healers' National Council will set up an Institute
Whereby herbalist shall be trained to acquire the necessary skills.

4, Herbalists were advised to register their associations with NCST so that
they receive assistance to develop and add value to Indigenous Medicine.

5 Traditional Healers vowed to fight bad rituals that tarnish the good and
usefulness of our indigenous medicine. And both medical doctors and
Traditional Healers agreed to work together by referring complicated cases
to each other for purpose of restoring health.

6. Participants appealed to The National Drug Authority to revise and set
up reasonable fee structures rates and to soften the procedures of
registering Natural drugs. They requested the National Chemotherapeutics
Research Laboratory to avail Technical Training to Herbalists.

7. Participants were advised to recognize the presence of spiritually
orientated health problems as practically active in Life and to Refer such
cases to Native Spiritual Healers.

8. Traditional Healers were advised to apply modern scientific methods in
production of natural drugs and to work with trained scientists in order to
determine the active pharmacological Components in their medicines and
dosages and
to emphasizing rationale in their work.

9. Herbalists were requested to pick the examples of swissguarde and House
of Health, who use similar raw materials of nutational and medicinal value
but due to better scientific methods have taken over the market from our
Local Herbal and Nutritional practitioners.

10. participants appreciated and praised Kampala University for
organizing a successful workshop where Western Trained doctors,
Probationers Traditional Medicine, Health experts, Pharmacologists,
Acclaimed Scholars, N.D.A, National Chemotherapeutics and N.C.S.T experts
were brought together. They promised to co-operate and respond to all
Future arrangements and opportunities the University will avail to them.

11. Participant pledged to assist Kampala University in all its programmes
and efforts to achieve recognition as one of the Universities in the
country which has identified problems of promoting Traditional Medicines
and other Common Man's Problems.

12 The University is planning to establish a department of Traditional
Medicine and promised to organize similar Conferences and Workshops at
least twice a year.

Medicinal Importance of Bitter Leaf (locally called ewuro) Bitter leaf is a medicinal plant of the family Asteraceae. It is a small perennial shrub that grows in tropical Africa. Vernonia amygdalina is commonly called bitter leaf because of its bitter taste and it can be propagated either by cutting or seedling. Today, the plant is widely known throughout the continent and nearly 85% of Nigerians cultivates the plant due to its nutritional and medicinal values. It is locally called 'ewuro' in yorubaland.
